Moving out west from living over 20 years on the East Coast was a definite change. I spent the first few weeks convinced I was sick with the flu, but after talking with a doctor, and speaking with my husband, there are a few things about the area's climate that newcomers should be aware of. Despite the recent rainfall (which has not been normal for the area), the climate around here is usually very dry, which makes allergies all the more present in the atmosphere. Even if you usually don't suffer from allergies, especially if you are moving from the East Coast, there is a different ecosystem out here. Apparently, juniper trees and their seeds are often potential allergens if people are not used to being exposed to them. So, I have adjusted by keeping some Claritin in the house and when my throat or eyes seem scratchy, take one in the morning.
As for climate, the weather almost always hovers around 60 degrees mid-day and closer to mid-40s in the morning and at night. What I have learned is always to bring a sweatshirt or light jacket in the car if I go out. Sometimes you are out for longer than expected and then get caught out in the cold. Since we are close to the ocean, there is also almost always a moderate to strong breeze. Here's to healthy and fit families!
